Threat to national organization of Jehovah's Witnesses continues in Moscow court

SESSION ON APPEAL OF WARNING OF PROSECUTOR GENERAL ON 23 SEPTEMBER IN MOSCOW

Press Service of Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia, 23 September 2016

The Administrative Center of Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia is appealing in court a warning about the impermissibility of conducting extremist activity that was issued by a deputy of the prosecutor general of the Russian federation. The warning evokes worry inasmuch as it threatens the closure of the administrative center. On 18 July 2016, representatives of foreign embassies came to the first court hearing in Tver district court of the city of Moscow, in the capacity of observers.

The court conducted a conversation with the parties and scheduled the main court hearing for 23 September 2016. It is being held at the address Tsvetnoy Boulevard 25A, and it began at 9:00 a.m. Judge Maria Moskalenko is hearing the case.

We will await the results of the hearing. (tr. by PDS, posted 25 September 2016)

COURT POSTPONES HEARING ON JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES' LAWSUIT REQUESTING PROSECUTOR GENERAL'S WARNING BE QUASHED

Press Service of Administrative Center of Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia, 23 September 2016

Hearings on the lawsuit of Jehovah's Witnesses, who are requesting that the "Warning about the impermissibility of conducting extremist activity" that was issued by a deputy of the prosecutor general of Russia be ruled to be illegal, were postponed to 12 October 2016. The judge granted the Jehovah's Witnesses time to acquaint themselves with the rebuttal to the lawsuit and to the 200 pages that were attached to it, which were presented to the court by representatives of the prosecutor's office one day before the beginning of the hearing, although representatives of the prosecutor's office insisted on the immediate continuation of the trial.

Jehovah's Witnesses are decisively opposing the hanging on them of the label of "extremists," emphasizing that extremism is profoundly alien to their views and morals that are based on the Bible. (tr. by PDS, posted 25 September 2016)
