First Year Scheduling Recommendations
for Students Interested in the
See "Preliminary Notes" in Arts & Sciences
for recommendations concerning a First Year Seminar and a Writing course.
- Introductory Biology I (BIOL 141P) in the fall and Introductory
Biology II (BIOL 142P) in the spring. Students who have AP/IB or transfer credit for BIOL 141P
or both BIOL 141P and BIOL 142P sometimes choose to decline credit and take the course(s) at
Stetson to build a better understanding of the foundational materials covered in the course(s).
It is very important for students to discuss the courses they have taken and their educational/career
goals with a faculty member in the Biology department prior to making a decision
to accept or decline AP/IB and transfer credit.
- Students who have AP/IB or transfer credit for BIOL 141P may take BIOL 142P if a
section is being offered in the fall or may wait and take it in the spring.
- Students who have AP/IB or transfer credit for both BIOL 141P and BIOL 142P should take
CHEM 141P and then CHEM 142P. They may take BIOL 243Q if they are feeling confident of
their mathematical skills and there are seats available.
- Mathematics: Biology majors are required to have MATH 125Q or MATH 130.
Students who struggle a little with mathematics are strongly encouraged to take MATH 125Q
during their first year to help prepare them for BIOL 243Q Biostatistics which they will be taking
in their second year. Students who are interested in Pre-Health or plan to pursue a graduate
degree should take MATH 130, but it does not have to be taken in the first semester.
