First Year Scheduling Recommendations
for Students Interested in the
Mathematics Major
The recommendations shown below are appropriate for the Mathematics Major and the
Financial Mathematics major.
Recommendations:

See "Preliminary Notes" in Arts & Sciences
for recommendations concerning a First Year Seminar and a Writing course.
Students are strongly encouraged to take
a Calculus course during their first semester.
The specific sequence of mathematics courses and whether a course is taking during
the first semester depends on the whether credit is being brought in for a Calculus course
and the score earned on the Math Placement Exam.
Placement for students who do not have credit for MATH 141Q will be determined by the
Math Placement Exam.
The exam should be taken at the earliest possible time.
If the Math Placement Exam indicates that you are ready for MATH 141Q, then you should
take MATH 141Q during your first semester. You will take MATH 142Q during your second semester.
If the Math Placement Exam indicates that you are ready for MATH 130, then it is strongly
recommended that you review topics that you did not do well on and retake the placement test
to qualify for MATH 141Q. There is a noncredit online review course that is available to
assist with this review (see Math Placement Exam
for details). If you are unable to qualify
for MATH 141Q by the start of the semester, then you should take MATH 130 during your first
semester and MATH 131Q during your second semester.
If the Math Placement Exam indicates that you are not ready for MATH 141Q or MATH 130, then
it is critical that you review topics that you did not do well on and retake the placement test.
There is a noncredit online review course that is available to assist with this review (see
Math Placement Exam
for details). It is very important to be able to take MATH 141Q (preferred)
or MATH 130 during your first semester.
Student with credit for MATH 141Q from AP/IB/AICE exams or transfer credit should take
Calculus II (MATH 142Q) in the fall, and should talk to an adviser in the department about
recommendations for spring.
 Students who have credit for
both MATH 141Q and MATH 142Q should take Calculus III (MATH 243Q) in the fall,
and should talk to an adviser in the department about
recommendations for spring.
