The venue was marketed by Ashley Vahedian ’04 and catered by A Taste of Thyme, owned by alumna Kimberly Enos Oropeza ’95. Alumni enjoyed hearing an update from university President Doug Lee and visited with each other at the neon bar.

Several Hatters tried out a new method for Speed Networking on Feb. 22 in Atlanta, where the alumni offices of Stetson and Georgia State partnered for an event at the Holiday Inn Select. Georgia State Sen. Chip Rogers was the guest speaker before participants counted off at round tables to share their career information and then hear a Stetson update from Alumni Board President-elect Bill Gray ’89. Speed Networking, which has been called “speed dating for businesspeople,” is growing in popularity, and Stetson’s event received great coverage in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Stetson University Concert Choir Tours Southeast

The Stetson University Concert Choir toured the Southeast in early March, giving concerts at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville; the Royal Poinciana Chapel in Palm Beach; Dunwoody United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Ga.; Myers Park Baptist Church and Providence High School in Charlotte, N.C.; and First Baptist Church in Savannah, Ga.

Dr. Alan Raines, new director of Choral Activities at Stetson, conducted the select choir in a varied program, including 20th century English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Serenade to Music,” three pieces from Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Magnificat” and several spirituals.

Dr. Alan Raines

Raines, who holds a doctorate in Choral Conducting from UCLA, joined Stetson’s School of Music faculty last fall, coming from Georgia State University in Atlanta. He serves on the conducting faculty of La Musica Lirica in Urbania, Italy, and is artistic director of the Elysium Chamber Orchestra and Chorus in Atlanta. This summer, he will assume the post of assistant conductor for the orchestra and chorus at the Bellingham Festival of Music in Bellingham, Wash. President H. Douglas Lee Announces Plans to Retire in 2 Years

Margaret and Doug Lee

Stetson University President Doug Lee, whose visionary leadership over nearly two decades strengthened academic quality and transformed Stetson into a more diverse and socially responsible institution, will retire in May 2009.

Dr. Lee’s retirement will coincide with Stetson’s 125th anniversary in the 2008-09 academic year. Upon his retirement, he will become chancellor of the university, a position equivalent to president emeritus. Lee will be just the third chancellor in Stetson’s history.

The Board of Trustees has initiated the process to prepare for a national search for Lee’s successor. The board selected Board Chairman Nestor de Armas ’68 to lead a search committee. The committee will lead the national search during 2008. The Board of Trustees expects to hire a new president in early 2009 and have the person on-board by around June 2009.

Lee, 63, has served as president of Stetson since June 1987, when he was promoted from his previous position as executive vice president at the university. Lee and his wife, First Lady Margaret Lee, plan to live in DeLand.

Read the full news release about Lee’s retirement announcement.

Tornadoes Damage Stetson Crew Site; Stetson Helps Neighbors

The tornadoes that hit DeLand and Central Florida on Feb. 2 missed the Stetson campus, but made a direct hit at the Hatter Crew Team site at Lake Beresford. All 20 of the team’s boats and related equipment and structures were destroyed.

Click the above photo for more images of the Hatter Crew Team site destruction.

Damage has been estimated at $270,000 or more. The Aquatic & Marine Biology program’s research pontoon boat docked at the site was also heavily damaged, though the program’s small research building was largely spared.

The Hatter Crew Team returns to action on Feb. 24.

The Stetson Crew Team returned to competition Feb. 24, earning medals in several races. The Hatters hosted the Stetson Sprints from an alternate site using borrowed and rented equipment. Anyone wishing to contribute to the replacement effort should make checks payable to Stetson University with "Crew Tornado Fund" in the memo line and mail to the following address: Crew Tornado Fund, 421 N. Woodland Blvd, Unit 8359, DeLand, FL 32723.

In keeping with Stetson’s tradition of community service, many students, faculty and staff have been deeply involved in cleanup efforts at the crew site and in the affected neighborhoods a few miles south of campus. The Stetson community also raised money, through a dinner and yard sale, for a Stetson cafeteria employee whose home was destroyed by a tornado that hit DeLand a month earlier, on Christmas Day.

Stetson University Organizes New Parent Council

Stetson University is forming a new Parent Council to get parents more involved. With more than 100 student organizations and associations, Stetson students can participate in many activities and programs and know that they have a voice on campus. Now parents will have the same opportunity.

The Parent Council will consist of parents of current and past Stetson students who are dedicated and proven leaders focused on assisting the university with student recruitment, career networking, fundraising and student life. Parent Council membership will be by invitation to parents who demonstrate a commitment to the vision and values of Stetson University. The first official Parent Council meeting will be held during Family Weekend in October. If you have any questions regarding the Parent Council, please contact Ruthanne Madsen, director of Annual Giving, at (386) 822-4248 or rmadsen@stetson.edu.

Music Board of Advisors Presents Resolution to Dean Woodward

Ernie Murphy ’54, Margaret Lee, Kathie Woodward, Jim Woodward, Doug Lee and Music Board Chair Patrick Lane ’01 pose after the Music Board presented a resolution to Dr. Woodward.

The Stetson University School of Music Board of Advisors presented a resolution Feb. 16 to retiring Dean of Music Jim Woodward “for his tireless devotion to Stetson University, its School of Music and its faculty and students.”

Dr. Woodward, dean of the School of Music since 1985, will retire in May, at the end of the 2006-07 academic year. Under his leadership, the School of Music has become one of the most recognized undergraduate schools of music in the nation. Enrollment more than doubled during his tenure, and he recruited the nation’s finest musicians and teachers to the faculty.

Associate Dean of Music Jean West heads the search committee for his replacement and Stetson hopes the new dean of Music can be in place by the fall of 2007.

The Music Board includes 15 alumni representatives, including Melodye Browning Bernier ’80; Brenda Jones Brown ’62; Linda Edwards Campbell ’75; Lorna Jean Brooks Hagstrom, MA ’64; Dorothy Peterson Johnson, MA ’66; Milton Jones ’55; Jim Kearce ’58; Chuck Kleinschmidt ’68; Patrick Lane ’01 (chair); Ernie Murphy ’54; Harold Parson ’48; Rabel Moremen Parson ’48; Beth Huckaby Stalvey ’70; Betty Furches Kruhm ’59, MEd ’86; and Gerald Kruhm ’57, MEd ’71, Ed.Spec. ’81.

Students Participate in Spring Break Externship Program

Communications major Liz DeFreitas ’07 meets with Stetson Special Event Coordinator Peggy Fox as part of a Spring Break Externship.

While many students opted for sun and fun over Spring Break, five Stetson students got a jump-start on their careers. Stetson’s Spring Break Externship Program, sponsored by the Office of Career Services, gives students the opportunity to be placed with a professional in a career of interest for the week of Spring Break (this year it was March 5-9). During the week, students job-shadow their externship sponsors, help out with projects, and get a good feel for what their sponsors do in their professions.

“We are thrilled that five students participated in this extremely beneficial program this year,” said Jill Rushbrook, assistant director of Career Services. “Not only do students get a better understanding of what a particular career is all about, but they also are able to establish connections and build their résumés.”

The success of this program is due largely to alumni who are willing to offer their time as externship sponsors. Will Royall '04, Alumni Board member and president of Royall Media Inc., sponsored Andrea Fick ’09 in the digital media profession. Kelly Newsome King ’91, manager of internal communications at the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, sponsored Stephanie Ryan ’08 while she learned more about the field of communications. The three other participating students job-shadowed a special events coordinator, a museum curator and a drama teacher.

If you are interested in acting as an externship sponsor in your place of business next year, please contact Career Services at career@stetson.edu or (386) 822-7315. Or, simply volunteer to help with externships and job shadowing on the Hatternet Career Networking System.

Students Raise Awareness of FRAG Importance, Other State Issues

Student governments at Stetson and other private colleges and universities are working with the Independent Colleges & Universities of Florida (ICUF) on a campaign to educate state legislators on the importance of state-funded grant programs that benefit students at private institutions.

Faces of Frag Postcard“The Faces of ICUF” campaign includes postcards featuring pictures of students attending ICUF schools, a letter-writing campaign by students, and a brochure for lawmakers. The goal is to give legislators a connection to the students they represent in Tallahassee. The project also covers other issues important to college students, including a proposal to expand eligibility for the First Generation Matching Grant Program to qualifying students at ICUF institutions.

The two Stetson students featured in “The Faces of ICUF” postcards are Drew Glasnovich ’09, a sophomore from Titusville, and Quana Stone ’08, a junior from Orlando.

Stetson alumni serving in the Legislature currently are: Sen. Lisa Carlton ’86, Rep. Andy Gardiner ’92, Sen. Mike Haridopolos ’92, Rep. Rick Kriseman, JD ’87, Sen. Evelyn Lynn, MA ’69, Rep. Bill Proctor ’56 and Sen. Ronda Storms, JD ’95.

College of Law Team Wins 2007 National Tax Moot Court Competition

Students Tino Lisella, JD ’07, and Katie Cole, JD ’07, celebrate with coaches, Professor Jennifer Murphy and Adjunct Professor Craig Behrenfeld.

Stetson College of Law’s moot court team won the 2007 National Tax Moot Court Competition Feb. 10 in St. Pete Beach. It was the second year in a row that Stetson won the national competition.

This year’s team of Katie Cole, JD ’07, and Tino Lisella, JD ’07, remained undefeated throughout three days of competition. Sixteen teams from law schools around the country competed. The team was coached by Professor Jennifer Murphy and Adjunct Professor Craig Behrenfeld. A three-judge panel of U.S. Tax Court judges presided over the final rounds of competition, sponsored by the Florida Bar.

Stetson Athletics Debuts Dynamic New Web Site: www.gohatters.com

Stetson athletics has a new home on the Web. The Hatters have paired with XOS Technologies to create www.gohatters.com, a brand new multimedia showcase complete with live video and audio streaming of athletic events, a new online Web store, a photo store and all the latest news and stats. The site will soon incorporate live auctions, mobile services, and other developing features.

“As technology has created new opportunities in how we present the Stetson athletics department, we are excited to partner with XOS Technologies in giving our fans more ways to enjoy Hatter sports,” said Athletic Director Jeff Altier ’82, MEd ’87. Whether following the team through live or archived video, or purchasing new official team merchandise, XOS has allowed Hatter followers to support our teams in a way that had not been possible. This is a tremendous avenue for us to strengthen the identity of Stetson athletics.”

Stetson Baseball Named One of Top Programs Since 1999

The Stetson University baseball program was named one of Baseball America's Top 50 schools. Baseball America, a well-known publication, decided to have a little fun and rank the top programs over the last eight years – just in time for the start of the spring season. In 1999, the NCAA expanded its post-season field to include 64 teams and also instituted new rules regarding aluminum bats. The Hatters were the only Atlantic Sun Conference school to make the list.

During this eight-year stretch, the Hatters made the post-season tournament six times, won the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament three times (including the last two) and averaged 38 wins per year. Frank Corr ’02 (in 2000) and Chris Westervelt ’04 (in 2002 and 2004) earned conference Player of the Year awards, and the Hatters put 15 players on the First Team All-Conference lists.

The 2007 season began Feb. 9. The Hatters’ home schedule this year features LSU, Florida, Louisville, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Iowa, Michigan State, Central Michigan and UCF in addition to their A-Sun rivals.

You Shared This With Us…

In preparation for Homecoming 2007, when Harold “Prof” Giffin (1907-1997) will be honored, we asked you to share stories about the popular Music professor who taught at Stetson from 1935 to 1972.

"Prof" Giffin in 1967

A friend recommended Jack H. Coldiron ’53, D.M. Hon. ’94, for a Stetson Music scholarship to “Prof Giffin.” He borrowed $250 and rode a bus to DeLand from Tennessee. “I waited outside ‘Prof’s’ studio in DeLand Hall until he came in wearing his usual golf shirt, baseball cap and moccasins,” said Coldiron, now Brown professor of Music at Baylor University, Waco, Texas. “From that first meeting began an association that lasted until his death. He was my voice teacher, my choral director, my mentor and my dear friend for well over 30 years. Later, he along with Dean Claude Almand and other generous Stetson faculty members, invited me to join the Music faculty. I have now completed over 50 years of teaching voice at schools and universities including Stetson, Southwestern Baptist Seminary and Baylor.”

“‘Prof’ Giffin was a wonderful teacher and friend,” Coldiron said. “How much peanut butter sandwiches and milk I consumed in his home I cannot estimate. He and Ginny were welcoming and my family away from home. ‘Prof’ pushed me to learn and offered me opportunities to perform in churches, before winter visitor's clubs, on choir tours and in many other venues. He had a special way of inspiring his students. He made you want to sing and to do so at the highest artistic level of which you were capable. I will never forget him and his family. I owe him an incalculable debt and I remember him with love and gratitude.”

“One of his favorite phrases was, ‘You must do your best. You will be required to perform like this when you get in ‘pro circles.’ I remember that some of us Glee Clubbers drew chalk circles on the walk in front of DeLand Hall once and stood in the circles to greet him when he arrived. He was not amused. Long Live ‘Prof’ Giffin and Stetson University!”

"Prof" Giffin conducts students in 1971.

Ken Colson ’74 remembers “Prof” as a tough choral director. “He expected much from his students...he also gave much in his teaching,” Colson said. “During my first year on the ‘T’ travel squad of Concert Choir, we were in Miami singing at the Florida Baptist Convention. My grandfather died while on tour. ‘Prof’ personally took me to the airport to buy a ticket, then made sure I got to the airport for the flight to Jacksonville.”

“Another time after I graduated and was married and living in DeLand, my car died,” he said. “‘Prof’ found out and loaned me the white convertible! I knew what the car meant to him and was quite surprised. I really should not have been surprised because ‘Prof’ was like that. If he had it and could give it or loan it to one of his students, he would.”

“Another story. A group of us who sang in a small ensemble during ‘Prof's’ last year teaching came back for a reunion, pool party and get-together with ‘Prof’ 10 years after he retired,” Colson said. “We surprised him with a rehearsal of the ‘old music’ asking him to warm us up and lead. We were surprised to see tears in his eyes during the rehearsal. It was a very emotional experience for all 10 of us who returned for the reunion. We had the traditional cookout and pool party at his house. All of us in the small ensemble look at that time as very special because not long after that, Prof entered the nursing home. Thanks, Giffin family, for allowing me to be a part of the family. ‘Prof’ was my mentor and friend.”

…Now We Want to Know This!

Did you hang out at Rodeo Whip during your Stetson years? Sadly, the landmark hangout was wrecked by the tornadoes that hit DeLand on Feb. 2. Undisclosed plans are underway to fix the place up and bring it back, but meanwhile, we’d love to have you share a story about fun times with friends at Rodeo Whip.
