The Biology Major At Stetson

In this new century, biologists will play an important role in society by preserving endangered species, conserving vanishing land and resources, and implementing new medical advances. Stetson Biology students learn to value objectivity, to develop a sense of responsibility towards preserving natural systems, to work as effective team members, and to understand the dynamic nature of scientific knowledge.

At Stetson, students may obtain either a Bachelor of Science Degree or a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology. In both majors we stress a hands-on approach to learning. All Biology courses include lab sessions and all students are required to complete a senior research project. In these research projects students move beyond simply learning what is already known and begin to generate new knowledge. 

Course Requirements:

• General Education Requirements for the College of Arts and Sciences.

• Lower-Division Major Requirements:

  • Biology 101 and 102 (General Biology)

  • Biology 201 and 202 (Biostatistical Methods)

  • Chemistry 101 and 102 (General Chemistry)

  • Any math course except the MS 150 series

• Upper-Division Major Requirements:

  • Biology 396 (Research Proposal)

  • Biology 496 (Senior Seminar)

  • Biology 498 (Senior Research)

• Other:

  • 4 additional 300 or 400 level courses (16 credits) in the department.

• Recommendations:

  • Students considering graduate study should take Physics 101 and 102 as well as Organic Chemistry (CY 303 and 304).
