• 1953 obtained a teachers' diploma
• 1954 received B.A. degree from the University of South Africa
• 1960 ordained as a priest
• 1976 consecrated Bishop of Lesotho
• 1978 became General Secretary of the South Arican Council
  of churches
• 1979 received honorary doctorate of laws from Harvard University
• 1984 awarded the Nobell Peace Prize, in recognition of his nonviolent campaign to limit international trade and
  investment activities in South Africa.
• 1985 became Bishop of Johannesburg
• 1986 Archbishop of Cape Town and head of the Anglican Church in Southern Africa
• 1996 retired as Archbishop, became Chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa, and presided over the traumatic revelation; of the secrets of apartheid
