Feryal Qudorah '12

On the Stage

Stetson alumna Feryal Qudourah ’12 has also made a name for herself after receiving the Metropolitan Opera Encouragement Award this January. As one of the recipients of the Karen Schmitt Roberts Career Development Travel Fund Scholarship, Feryal graduated from Stetson with a BM in Voice Performance and has since gone on to pursue her M.M. at Indiana University. Since her graduation from Stetson, she has performed in “The Telephone” presented by the Florida Opera Theatre. Feryal will preform again in “Die Zauberflöte” in Weimar, Germany this summer. Stetson has hired three new directors and a new Dean of Music. Our new staff are: Carol Buckles, Director of Grants; Amy Gipson, Director of Strategic Communications; and Tara Jones, Director of Student Financial Planning. Read more about them here.

Leadership Stetson

Leadership Stetson is an annual program developed to identify the next generation of leaders for the university. This year’s Leadership Stetson took place early in February. Twenty-six Hatter alumni came to campus to receive campus updates, learn about how Stetson operates, meet the staff, and learn about their personal passions and how to use them to get involved with Stetson. “I really enjoyed Leadership Stetson,” said alumnus Antony Chan ’97. “I was able to reconnect with my university to experience the current state of things and to become energized about future vision. Also, I made new friends in the process. I look forward to staying involved.”

Alumni Social in Fort Lauderdale

This January, alumni gathered in downtown Fort Lauderdale at Tap 42 Bar and Kitchen for an evening with fellow Hatters. This event was hosted by Broward County District Co-Chairs Allison Foster ’04 and Laura Bernal Luzniak ’93. Homecoming 2013 Reunion Planning Conference

Plans are already underway for Homecoming 2013! A Reunion Planning Conference was held to assemble class volunteers and begin the planning process. Celebrating reunions this year are the classes of: 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003, and 2008. Volunteers for each of these classes have already stepped up to plan their reunion, but they could use your help! Oscar Bluemner Art Collection in New Jersey

Dr. Roberta Smith Favis, professor emeritus of art history and curator of the exhibition Oscar Bluemner’s America: Picturing Paterson, New Jersey, will be at the Montclair Art Museum on March 7. Vice President for University Relations, Carol Julian and Dr. Favis will be giving a private update to Stetson guests on the Bluemner Collection in the Whitehead Conference Room. Color Me Mine

Another Stetson event will be held in Fort Lauderdale on March 7 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. This alumni and family event will take place at Color Me Mine, a studio where you can paint your own pottery! Catch up with fellow alumni and their families and let your creativity flow!

Stetson Night with the Miami Heat

Join your fellow Hatter alumni at the Miami Heat game Friday, March 22. Reconnect with fellow classmates while cheering on the home team! Get your tickets to the pre-game party and game here.

Alumni Picnic and Jazz Brunch

On April 7 your fellow alumni will gather in downtown Fort Lauderdale for an alumni family picnic and jazz brunch. This event is free and open to the public. Bring your own beverages and snacks and enjoy the morning and early afternoon with live musical performances!

The 11th Annual Mad Hatter Golf Classic will be Monday, April 29, 2013, at the Emerald Green Golf Resort and Country Club. All players will receive a Summer Paradise card valued at $200. Ariel Arthur '14

Ariel Arthur ’14 is a cellist student working toward her bachelor’s degree in Music Performance. She is a co-principal of the Stetson Symphony and the Stetson Chamber Orchestra as well as a substitute for the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. Ariel is a recipient of the Karen Schmitt Roberts Career Development Travel Fund Scholarship, which is sponsored by the Alumni Board of Directors.

During her time at Stetson, Ariel has studied under Professor David Bjella, performed under Matthais Bamert, JoAnn Falletta, and Keith Lockhart. She has attended numerous festivals which include the Brevard Music Center, the Innsbrook Institute, the National Music Festival, and the Foulger International Music Festival where she sat 1^st cello for Schubert’s Cello Quintet in C Major. It was at this festival that Ariel also played in concert at the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

After nine years of studying the cello, Ariel recently won the Young Artist Performance Division of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Competition in October 2012. This past January she attended the MTNA Southern Division – Young Artists Competition where she received an honorable mention. She is currently a Junior and plans on graduating in 2014.

Homecoming 2012

This year’s Homecoming was held in the Fall for the first time in over 50 years! November 2-4 Hatters from across the nation came back to campus to reunite, reconnect, and reminisce with classmates.

Events kicked off on Friday evening with the Food and Wine Festival where Hatters enjoyed food from around the world on the Stetson Green. On the other side of campus, a carnival and pep rally brought Hatters of all ages together for fun and games. Later on, the Edmunds Center became a packed house, as Brad Sherwood and Colin Mochrie from Whose Line is it Anyway? performed to a sold out crowd. The evening was capped off with a grand finale firework show!

We didn’t slow down there! On Saturday, November 3^rd East Minnesota Avenue was closed off for the Food Truck Bazaar and the Green and White Football game. A record number of alumni, family, and friends turned out for this exciting event. Even half time was jam packed with excitement as past football players from Stetson’s last football team were honored, the Homecoming King and Queen were announced, and the Greek Legacy Cup winners were recognized.

Homecoming weekend was a tremendous success! If you didn’t make it to campus this year, we hope to see you next year as we celebrate Stetson’s first Football season in over 50 years! Spring Break Choir Tour

As campus slows down for Spring Break, the Stetson Concert Choir will be on tour and possibly heading to a city near you! March 2-9, 2013 they will be traveling through Florida to Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia. They will be making stops in Tampa, Birmingham, New Orleans, Nashville, Atlanta, Savannah, and Jacksonville. More information will be forthcoming. And be sure to check our events page.

Atlanta Social

Alumni, friends, and parents will gather together April 27, 2013 at the historic Glenridge Hall in Atlanta, GA. Come mingle and catch up with fellow Hatter alumni while enjoying light appetizers and drinks. More information will be forthcoming.
