 Dictionary of National Biography
by Oxford

Limited to one simultaneous user.

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is an illustrated collection of 50,000 specially written biographies of the men and women who shaped all aspects of Britain\'s past, from the fourth century BC to the year 2000. Living people are not included.

Articles were written by 10,000 contributors, including university scholars, independent researchers, and writers drawn from many disciplines. The group of authors is also geographically diverse. Just over 7,000 contributors are based in the United Kingdom, and the remainder are residents of forty-nine countries (including 1,396 from the United States, 302 from Australia, 52 from Germany, and 16 from India).

The library has the paper reprint of the original 1885-1901 edition and the supplements through 1985 (Ref. DA28 .D47). This electronic edition includes everyone included in the print edition, but the articles about them have been completely rewritten or substantially revised to reflect modern scholarship (70% of the Oxford DNB is completely new text, with 30% revised more or less heavily from the old text). Thus, the original paper edition remains of importance for historians.

Online updates will be published three times each year (starting in January 2005) and new biographies (taking in people who died after 2000) will be added.
