STETSON UNIVERSITY ALUMNI AUTHORS
Compiled and
edited by Betty Drees Johnson
This is a
bibliography of books, most held by the library, which have been published by
our alumni over the years, and it is a developing list and collection. We ask alumni to send us copies (preferably
autographed) of their books if they are not on the current list, and the
bibliography will be updated on a regular basis to include these
additions. A later project will expand
the information to include journal articles and articles in books.
Our authors
cover a wide variety of subjects. Some
of our alumni became involved in local history and wrote of the history of
their towns or churches, such as Jim Ward (1956) and Louise Caccamise (1956). Ed L'Heureux (1961), with a career in
insurance, began writing fiction in 1987 and continues to publish novels and
short stories.
Many of our
authors are scholars and professors.
Ronald G. Knapp (1962) earned his Ph.D. in Chinese Studies at the
University of Pittsburgh and spent a long career at the State University of New
York at New Paltz, retiring early in 2001 to concentrate on his research and
writing. The Choice reviewer for Knapp's 2005 book House Home Family: Living and Being Chinese called it "a must
addition for college libraries."
Jay Mechling (1967), now Professor of American Studies at the University
of California, Davis, has published several books and a number of articles in
the field of American culture. His most
recent book, On My Honor: Boy Scouts and
the Making of American Youth, was widely reviewed favorably. One of the better known scholar/authors may
be George Edwards III (1969), a specialist in presidential leadership who is
often quoted in the news media. History
major Harold Sims (1962) earned his Ph.D. at the University of Florida and has
spent his career in college teaching. He
has published numerous articles and several books on Latin America, including
one with famed Latin Americanist Magnus Mörner.
J. Scott Rutan (1962) earned a Ph.D. in psychology and has written
several books in the field of psychotherapy while continuing to practice. Jewel Spears Brooker (1962) has published
several books on T.S. Eliot and was invited to give the Fall 2006 Lawson
Lecture at Stetson. Some of these
scholars returned to Stetson as faculty members, such as Bob Perkins (1954),
Mike Raymond (1968), Ron Hall (1967), and Wayne Dickson (1964). You will identify others with academic
careers as you review the bibliography.
Several
alumni write professionally. Louis
Phillips (1964) majored in English and has successfully combined careers in
education and writing, with a range of poetry, plays, and children's
books. English major Nancy Rue (1973)
began her publishing career in 1983 when she co-authored a book for
teenagers. A few years later she
published her first work of fiction for young people, and we now have
twenty-six of her books in our Alumni Authors Collection. In addition to the fiction, usually with a
Christian theme, she continues to write books designed to guide young people in
a Christian life.
Not all of
the authors graduated from Stetson University.
Famed herpetologist E. Ross Allen entered Stetson in 1927 but had to
leave when the Depression made it impossible for him to continue. Robert Wilder, author of Flamingo Road and many other novels, some of which were filmed,
attended Stetson in 1918 before transferring to Columbia University.
The listing
of the known alumni who have published books follows, with links to the bibliographic
information on each title.
