Special Collections
In addition to the University
Archives, the duPont-Ball Library
also houses and manages some rare or valuable materials not directly
related to the University's history. Along with some ephemera,
Special Collections include the items such as those listed below.

- Cleland Collection
Large collection of personal, military, and political memorabilia of
Joseph Maxwell "Max" Cleland, Stetson alumnus, decorated Vietnam veteran,
head of the Veterans Administration under President Jimmy Carter, and
former U.S. Senator from Georgia. Please ask to see our Politicos Room
that holds some of the Cleland Collection.
- Greenlaw Collection
Large collection of children's books, many of them first editions
and signed by the author and/or illustrator. Donated by Stetson alumna
and University of North Texas Professor Emeritus Jean Greenlaw.
- Kelley Photo Collection
Col. William A. (Spike) Kelley, who had a distinguised Army career,
retired to Volusia County, Florida and donated his collection of
signed photographs of prominent military leaders and political figures
to the Stetson University Library.
- Letterheads
The Stetson University Library Archives contains thousands of
letters dating back to the 1880s. Many of the letterheads on these
documents are detailed and historical; we add examples to these pages as
we find unique letterheads of interest.
- Morse Photo Collection
Orwin Allison Morse directed the Stetson University School of
Music from 1904-1909. His family donated a collection of photos
of famous musicians, most autographed or personally signed to Mr.
Morse. Although most of the photos were taken in the 1920s when Mr.
Morse lived in Sioux City, Iowa, a number of these musicians
performed at Stetson during Mr. Morse's tenure.
- Original Signatures of Historical Figures
The Stetson University Library Archives contains original signatures
and autographs of a number of famous and/or historical figures back
to the 1880s. We add examples to these pages as we find signatures
of historical or cultural interest.
- Regar Collection
The Regar Collection includes 13 Civil War era letters written
by James Frederick Allen before, during, and after he became a
prisoner of war at Andersonville Prison, the spoon Allen used at
Andersonville, the Bible he had in prison, and a number of other
family keepsakes. The collection also includes 100 family photos.
The collection was donated by James Frederick Allen's direct
descendants Donald Allen Regar and his four children,
Donald Allen Regar, Jr., Alison Regar Betancor, Allen William Regar,
and Adam Frederick Regar.
- Shaw Collection
The official Congressional papers of Representative E. Clay Shaw, Stetson
alumnus, who
represented south Florida in the U.S. Congress for 26 years. The collection
includes a large collection of official papers, policy notebooks, videos,
DVDs, and many photos. Please ask to see our Politicos Room
that holds some of the Shaw Collection.
- Standish Collection
The Standish collection, donated by Mrs. Tufts of Kissimmee, Florida,
includes material relating to the Standish family of Chautauqua County,
New York. The collection includes three Civil War era letters from
Amos S. Standish of Chautauqua County, a soldier in the Escelsior
Brigade, 3rd Regiment in the Union Army.
- Surratt Collection: James B. Reynolds Papers
A collection of fourteen historical manuscripts: thirteen letters
written between 1816 and 1864 to U.S. Rep. James B. Reynolds, a 19th-century congressman
from Tennessee, and a handwritten draft of a circular Reynolds wrote
to his constituents in 1825. The collection was donated to Stetson
by Dr. James Surratt, Volusia school superintendent from 1984 to 1991.
- Treasure Collection of Rare Books
Books deemed rare or valuable are assigned to the Treasure collection.
Titles can be browsed by searching the
library catalog and changing the
location drop-box to TREASURE.
- Walt Disney World Press Kit
On April 30, 1969, officials from the Walt Disney Company held
a press conference in Orlando, Florida announcing the plans for a
Destination Vacation Resort on the Company's 27,000 acre site 16 miles
southwest of the city. Officials detailed the more than three years of
planning and preparation that led to the announcement of what would
become the Walt Disney World Resort.
- Miscellaneous Items of Interest
The Stetson University Library Special Collections includes a
number of items that are not part of a particular collection, but are
of historical or general interest.
