The Standish Collection

The Standish collection, donated by Mrs. Tufts of Kissimmee, Florida, includes material relating to the Standish family of Chautauqua County, New York:

Civil War Letters. The collection includes three letters from Amos S. Standish of Chautauqua County, a soldier in the Escelsior Brigade, 3rd Regiment in the Union Army. All letters are addressed to "Brother." Based on an envelope in the collection and the third letter, it may be assumed that "Brother" is George H. Standish (May 9, 1845 - August 1926). No additonal information has been located on Amos Standish.

The two letters from 1861 are in a different handwriting and appear to be written by a better educated person than the third letter. It may be assumed that the two 1861 letters were written by a scribe for Mr. Standish, not an uncommon practice at the time.

Transcriptions by Betty D. Johnson. Spelling as it appears in the original documents.
