Mission Statement
The mission of the Computer Science
Department at Stetson University is to offer a top-tier,
research-oriented undergraduate major that emphases software
engineering. Computer Science can be defined as the
study, development, and analysis of algorithms; software
engineering is the process of developing commercial grade
software. The combination of Computer Science and Software
Engineering is a powerful alliance. By combining these
two fields into a single curriculum, students are prepared
for advanced study in computer science and/or a career in
the software development industry. To this end, the
first two years are dedicated to building the foundation
needed to study the different fields of computer science
while providing the concepts of software engineering.
In their final two years, students study a wide range topics
within computer science through the study of algorithms.
In each of these classes, the students are expected to apply
the concepts of software engineering in the development
of their class projects.
Because of the wide range of uses
for today's software, the department strongly believes in
maintaining and enhancing an interdisciplinary-rich environment.
Furthermore, the department feels that students should understand
how technology can be applied to make a positive contribution
towards life and the environment. With the ability
to create and apply technology comes the need to understand
the ethical issues involved and the consequences of abusing
the use of technology.
