For many years, Phi Beta Kappans on the Stetson faculty worked to establish a chapter. After several campaigns and rigorous evaluation by the national organization, Gamma of Florida was chartered, the first chapter for a private college in Florida. In recognition of his work in gaining approval, John Hague was chosen as the chapter's first president.
On November 19, 1982, Catherine Sims, then president of the United Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, presented our charter at a university assembly. It is displayed near the entrance of the duPont-Ball Library.
