Gene is a failed sovietologist who is now trying to make sense of Russia and its neighbors. His baseball memories began in the sandspur-covered lots of Eustis, Florida. There was so little to do there in the 1950s and early 60s that only Sunday morning services brought out more people than Friday night Little League baseball. After a decent career in Little League, he grew almost a foot one summer in junior high and spent the next several years adjusting to his new body. He returned to diamond in college where he hit for power and average in fast-pitch intramurals. His favorite baseball memories are from Yankees spring training games against the Twins at Tinker Field, from Cal Ripken's rookie year at Memorial Stadium, and from the 1986 Red Sox at Fenway.
