Phillip is a professor of religious studies. More importantly, he is a lifelong Yankees fan who has warmed to the Hatters in the past 12 years (these relationships take time). His athletics career highlights included leading the league in hitting his final year of Teener ball in Sioux Falls, South Dakota (Siouxland Lions), finishing at .453 for the season. He was mostly a line drive hitter, with singles and doubles into the gaps. His best defensive position was shortstop, but he played also at third base, second base, and first base. He was a disaster as an outfielder and his pitching career was short-lived – too many hit batsmen. Intimidation was not acceptable at the teen ball level. He also played as a point guard in junior high and high school, and was a solid defender and streaky scorer.
He met Harmon Killebrew of the Twins as a teenager and got him to sign his first baseman's glove. He also met Jack Kralick, who, on August 26, 1962, pitching for Minnesota, no-hit the Kansas City Athletics 1-0, retiring the first 25 batters. He gave up one walk on a 3-2 pitch. Jack worked for a Yearbook company the years that Phillip was a sports editor for his high school yearbook, and so they had a chance to visit once a year. Phillip is now pulling for Lenny DiNardo to remain with the Bosox, even if it means beating the Yankees on occasion.
