Poroshenko marks Christmas in monastery of Kiev patriarchate

UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT OBSERVES CHRISTMAS IN MANIAVA SKETE

On the holiday of the Nativity of Christ, Ukrainian President Petr Poroshenko, along with his wife, Marina, and children, participated in the holiday worship service in the Maniava Elevation of the Cross monastery that is in the village of Maniava of Bogorodchany district of Ivano-Frankovsk province.

 

The service in celebration of Nativity was conducted by UPTsKP Metropolitan of Ivano-Frankovsk and Galicia Ioasaf and the abbot of the monastery, Father Paisy.

 

Upon the conclusion of the service, the president visited a representation of the crèche and chatted with believers who had come for the Christmas service. The presidential family sang Christmas carols along with everybody.

 

The president presented to the monastery a Kiev caves icon of the Mother of God.

 

Petr Poroshenko greeted Ukrainians on the holiday of Christmas and wished them peace, harmony, and prosperity in the 2015 New Year.

 

Information: The Maniava Elevation of the Cross monastery (Maniava Skete) is an ascetic monastery for men of the eastern rite (a.k.a., Ukrainian Athos), a prominent center of spirituality, culture, and art of Ukraine, founded by Iov Kniaginitsky in 1606 [in Poland--tr.] near the village of Maniava, Bogorodchany district, Ivano-Frankovsk province.

 

The Maniava Skete has a large library. It is famous for its main iconostasis of the work of Ukrainian iconographer Iov Kondzelevich. Later, after the closing of the monastery in 1785 [by the Austrian empire--tr.], the iconostasis was located in a church in the village of Bogorodchany, and since 1924 it has been in the Sheptitsky National Museum in Lvov.
