Orthodox Ukrainian leader in USA to request weapons

PATRIARCH FILARET WILL ASK USA GOVERNMENT TO ARM UKRAINE

RISU, 4 February 2015

The primate of UPTsKP, Patriarch Filaret, during a meeting with representatives of the American government, will speak about the role of the USA as guarantor of peace in Ukraine in accordance with the Budapest memorandum, as well as about help on the part of America, including arms. He said this during a press conference in the Ukrainian embassy in Washington, UNN reports with reference to Espreso.TV.

"Vladyka Epifany and I have come to the prayer breakfast that the president of the USA conducts annually, in order to pray together for peace and tranquility in the world, and on the other hand, to converse and recall that we are asking the United States to fulfill to the finish its obligation as guarantor, that is, to help Ukraine to defend its territory," the patriarch noted.

He recalled that in its time Ukraine demonstrated its love of peace when in 1994 it surrendered its entire potential for nuclear weapons, which was third largest in the world. Then the Budapest memorandum was signed and the USA, Great Britain, and Russia became the guarantors.

"If the Budapest memorandum is not observed, confidence in international agreements in the world will be lost," the patriarch noted.

Patriarch Filaret also confirmed that he will talk about the necessity of providing the Ukrainian army modern forms of defensive weapons. "We are able ourselves to produce weapons, but now we are asking for help to defend our territorial integrity," he noted.

Patriarch Filaret urged the diaspora to support Ukraine with money and humanitarian aid for the population that is suffering from aggression in the Donbass, as well as by prayers for peace and calm in the Ukrainian state.

We recall that the patriarch's visit to the USA will continue until 6 February. (tr. by PDS, posted 5 February 2015)
