HEAD OF UGKTs MEETS WITH UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT
On 28 February, at the request of the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, his meeting with the president of Ukraine was held. One of the main reasons for the meeting was the question of a possible visit to Ukraine by Roman Pope Francis. This was reported on the official UGKTs website.
As is known, during the pilgrimage of the bishops of the UGKTs to the Apostolic See, which occurred on 16 to 21 February of this year, His Beatitude Sviatoslav officially invited Pope Francis to visit our country. President Poroshenko also sent his own invitation to the pope to visit Ukraine.
"It is now necessary to await the official answer of the Apostolic See," the head of UGKTs noted in conversation with the president.
Poroshenko regarded highly the position of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the actions of its representatives, both at the time of the Revolution of Dignity and during the conduct of the Anti-Terrorism Operation. He was talking about the ministry of military chaplains and about various social initiatives which occurred both on the level of individual dioceses and on the level of the entire church.
In his turn, His Beatitude Sviatoslav described the social service for the involuntarily displaced persons that is being conducted by Caritas of Ukraine in the name of the church. Social workers provide assistance daily for about 40,000 persons in need.
At the conclusion of the meeting the sides noted the need for applying all efforts so that peace will arrive in Ukraine. (tr. by PDS, posted 1 March 2015)
