Russian Muslim leaders feel neglected in nationalistic surge

ECCLESIASTICAL BOARD OF MUSLIMS DISPLEASED WITH REVIVAL OF "RUSSIAN WORLD" AND IDEAS OF RUSSIAN PHILOSOPHERS

Interfax-Religiia, 13 March 2015

The first deputy chairman of the Ecclesiastical Board of Muslims [ Dukhovnoe Upravlenie Musulman—DUM] of the Russian federation, Damir Mukhetdinov, critized the concept of the "Russian World."

"According to the constitution, there cannot be in Russia a state ideology. But in effect the ruling elite has advanced and developed a proto-ideology whose formula is the recreation of the Russian World. And in this concept, the place and role of Islam has not been thought out and the Muslim population of the country has not been taken into account," D. Mukhetdinov declared at a conference in Perm, the website of the DUM of Russia reports.

He said that numerous questions have not been resolved precisely because at the level of strategic thinking "there is no Islam in Russia's future."

"Is it really difficult to resolve the problems of Muslims in Russia—from the construction of mosques and cultural centers to the prohibition of scarves on girls in schools and of the classics of Muslim literature? No, all the problems are easy to resolve, but only if there is a clear strategy," the Muslim leader declared.

He noted that during the formation of the new identity of Russia there was a reference to the heritage of the past, principally to Russian philosophers, "but at the same time it was completely left out of consideration that they worked in a different epoch."

The "Russian Idea" of Dostoevsky, Ilin, or Berdiaev are splendid examples of historiosophical thought, but they were expressed for a past day and not for the present day," D. Mukhetdinov declared.

"In short, what can be our contribution? First: we will criticize the omissions in the classics of Russian thought. A clear omission in the historiosophic projects of Russia philosophers, whether the 'Russian Idea' of Ilin and Berdiaev, or Slavophilism of Danilevsky and Leontiev, or Eurasianism of Savitsky and Tribetskoy, is that they played practically no attention to the Muslim factor," he suggests.
