Mormon teenagers arrested for missionary work in security-sensitive area

AMERICAN MORMONS ARRESTED IN LENINGRAD PROVINCE FOR VIOLATING BORDER REGULATIONS

Two Mormon missionaries were arrested in Leningrad province for violation of border regulations, the press service of the regional Border Directorate of FSB reported.

 

On Thursday evening, FSB border troops arrested two men in the village of Lebiazhie, who entered the border zone without permission documents.

 

"The culprits were two citizens of USA who were born in 1995 and 1996. According to the words of the detainees, they are adherents of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the church of Mormons) and they were conducting proselytizing activity and distributing literature in the border zone," the directorate's statement says.

 

Both young men expressed themselves in Russia well and at the time of their arrest and during questioning they did not act aggressively.

 

Explanatory work was conducted with the detainees. In accordance with the requirements of article 18.2 of the Code on Administrative Violations of Law, both violators were issued warnings, after which they were expelled from the border zone.

 

The 33rd select operational brigade of the northwestern regional command of internal troops of the Russian MVD is stationed in the village of Lebiazhie in the Lomonosov district of Leningrad province.
