Patriarch Kirill conducts patriotic liturgy in Moscow

ORTHODOX CELEBRATE RADONITSA, PATRIARCH PERFORMS SERVICE IN KREMLIN

RIA Novosti, 21 April 2015

For Orthodox Christians, on Tuesday Radonitsa arrives, when paschal commemoration of the departed is conducted. On this day, Patriarch of Moscow and all-Rus Kirill will perform a Divine Liturgy in the cathedral of the Archangel Michael of the Moscow Kremlin.

Radonitsa falls on the ninth day after Pascha. This name is etymologically connected with the words "rod" [kin] and "radost" [joy] and it testifies that believers should rejoice in remembering the departed who in passing from earthly life have been born "in life eternal."

In all churches of the Russian Orthodox Church, on this day requiem services are conducted, after which, according to developed tradition, Christians visit cemeteries.

As the patriarchal press service specified, the worship service in the Kremlin begins at 9.30.

Before the time of Peter I, the cathedral of the Archangel was the place of burial of Russian tsars and grand princes. Liturgies on Radonitsa were performed here also by the previous patriarch, Alexis II, who noted that those who are buried in the crypts of the Archangel cathedral "were distinguished by piety and faith, standing firm for Sacred Rus and strengthening the might of our fatherland."
