Ukrainian Orthodox Church (MP) takes case to Council of Europe

IN STRASBOURG METROPOLITAN ANTONY COMPLAINS ABOUT PERSECUTION OF UPTsMP IN UKRAINE

During his stay in Strasbourg, France, on 27 April 2015, the UPTsMP chancellor, Metropolitan of Borispol and Brovary, met with the Council of Europe's director general for democracy, Snežana Samardžić-Marković. The meeting was also attended by a representative of the European Commission for Combating Racism and Intolerance.

 

Metropolitan Antony was accompanied by the deputy head of the Department for External Church Relations of UPTsMP, Archpriest Nikolai Danilevich, and the rector of the parish in honor of All Saints in the city of Strasbourg, Hegumen Filipp.

 

Metropolitan Antony described for representatives of the Council of Europe the interconfessional situation in Ukraine and the violations of rights of believers of the UPTsMP. The vladyka expressed readiness to cooperate with the Council of Europe in guaranteeing the rights of believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church on the basis of generally accepted European norms.

 

As the official UPTsMP website reports, S. Samardžić-Marković expressed thanks for the information that was previously received by the Council of Europe from the Department for External Church Relations of UPTsMP. The representative of the Council of Europe expressed concern that such incidents have occurred and also assured Metropolitan Antony that appropriate agencies of the Council of Europe will undertake work on these incidents.

 

On the same day, Metropolitan Antony visited the Permanent Representation of Ukraine in the Council of Europe and talked with the head of the representation, N.S. Tochitsky. (tr. by PDS, posted 28 April 2015)
