Conflicting accounts of reason for transfer of jurisdiction by Ukrainian Orthodox parish

KHERSON DIOCESE DENIES INCORRECT INFORMATION AIRED ON TV "1 + 1"

Ukrainian Orthodox Church (MP), 28 April 2015

The press service of the Kherson diocese refuted incorrect information presented in a program on television channel "1 + 1" concerning the refusal of local clergy to remember in worship services troops of the ATO [Anti-Terrorism Operation], which supposedly was the cause for the "transfer" of the parish in honor of Saints Joachim and Anna of the village of Preobrazhenka, Chaplin district, Kherson province, from the bosom of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church into the UPTsKP.

In answer to the baseless accusation against UPTs, the Kherson diocese notes that priests of the border areas of Chaplin and Kalanchatsky districts of Kherson province, where the so-called "transfer" of the above mentioned parish occurred, conduct the most vigorous patriotic activity connected with the spiritual nurture and material help for Ukrainian troops. It also said that in all churches of Kherson diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church prayers are offered daily for peace in Ukraine, the fallen heroes of the ATO zone are continually remembered, and troops of the armed forces of Ukraine are given all manner of help that the church is able to provide.

The blatant falsehood evokes outrage, which is not the first time that it sounded from the lips of journalists of the notorious TV channel "1 + 1." The press service of the Kherson diocese sent to representatives of news media a call to refute this unconfirmed news that completely does not correspond to reality.

As noted previously, the cause of the "resubordination" of the parish in honor of Saints Joachim and Anna of the village of Preobrazhenka of the Chaplin district of Kherson province was provoked by a local businessman, M.M. Martinovets, who is hostile to UPTs. By intimidation and economic pressure he demanded that residents of the village of Preobrazhenka give their signatures in favor of the transfer of the local parish to the Kiev patriarchate. KHERSON PROVINCE: PREOBRAZHENKA PARISH TRANSFERS FROM MOSCOW PATRIARCHATE INTO KIEV FOR POLITICAL AND CANONICAL REASONS

Portal-credo.ru, 27 April 2015

A church parish in Kherson region where the UPTsMP traditionally dominates has transferred from the Moscow patriarchate into the Kiev patriarchate, the TV program TSN.Den reports. The first episcopal liturgy in the village of Preobrazhenka was performed by UPTsKP Archbishop of Kherson and Tauride Damian.

The church building belongs to the parish and, when the parishioners decided to change jurisdictions, the priest did not support them and left the village. This church is the first parish of the Kiev patriarchate in the Chaplin district of Kherson province.

"In 28 years, we have had 20 changes of the priest. And for some reason we have not had much of a complaint about the ones who were sent to us. And we decided to transfer after they did not want to remember our young fellows," a resident of the village of Preobrazhenka, Galina Maikovich, explained. (tr. by PDS, posted 30 April 2015)
