Religiia v Ukraine, 13 May 2015

On 11 May 2015, Bishop of Novoazovsk Varsonofy, vicar bishop of the Donetsk diocese of the UPTsMP, participated in "the celebration of the Day of the Republic" (the anniversary of the illegal referendum in the city of Donetsk). Earlier, on 8 May, Archbishop of Makeevka Varnava and Bishop of Novoazovsk Varsonofy performed under the flags of Novorossiia the ritual of ground breaking for a chapel in honor of St. Alexander Nevsky, Religiia v Ukraine reports, with reference to 24tv.ua and the website of the Donetsk diocese of UPTs.

The secretary of the synod of UPTsKP, Archbishop Evstraty, commented on a photograph of the events: "Apparently in this particular way the UPTsMP bishop was protesting against the war in the Donbass, standing at the podium next to the heads of the terrorists and welcoming their celebration."

The ritual of ground breaking for the chapel of the Holy Pious Prince Alexander Nevsky was performed with the blessing of Metropolitan of Donetsk and Mariupol Ilarion, on the territory of the Saur-Mogila memorial complex, by vicar bishops of the Donetsk diocese, Archbishop of Makeevka Varnava and Bishop of Novoazovsk Varsonofy.

Clergy of the Snezhnoe, Torezsk, and Shakhtersk deaneries and parishioners prayed along with the bishops at the site where more than 23,000 soviet soldiers died in the years of the Great Patriotic War. The clergy performed a requiem service recalling the achievement of the nation on the eve of Victory Day at a memorial cross that was restored after armed action in the summer of 2014.

The action took place under the flags of the USSR and Novorossia. (tr. by PDS, posted 15 May 2015)
