HEAD DISCUSSES COOPERATION WITH UKRAINIAN PRIME MINISTER

On
Friday, 29 May, UGKTs Major Archbishop Sviatoslav met with
Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk. Also participating in
the meeting were Vladyka Iosif Milian, assistant bishop of the
Kievan archdiocese, and Ukrainian people's deputy Viktor
Elensky, Religiia v Ukraine reports, with reference to the
website of UGKTs [Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church].
During
the conversation, the sides discussed examples of cooperation of
the UGKTs and government structures of Ukraine. His Beatitude
Sviatoslav described the social service that the church is
performing in contemporary special circumstances. He talked
about ministry for fonrcibly displaced persons and wounded
Ukrainian soldiers. At the same time the head of UGKTs noted the
necessity of correcting the legal bases which would offer the
possibility for better and more effective social service by the
church.
Special
attention was given to the preparations for celebrating the
150th anniversary of Metropolitan Andrei Sheptitsky. The UGKTs
primate thanked the head of the government for creating an
organizing committee for honoring the figure of Metropolitan
Andrei and for those initiatives that it has been decided to
implement.
In memory of the meeting, Sviatoslav presented Arceny Yatseniuk a book, "The Pilgrimage of Dignity and Freedom," and an icon of St. Nicholas of Myra, the Lycian Miracleworker. (tr. by PDS, posted 3 June 2015)
