Ukrainian Orthodox parishes dispute affiliation

SHEPETOVKA DIOCESE OF UPTs DENIES REPORT REGARDING TRANSFER OF RELIGIOUS PARISH TO UPTsKP

UNIAN, 5 June 2015

The administration of the Shepetovka diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church denies the report published on the website of the Khmelnitsky diocese of UPTsKP regarding the transfer of a religious parish of UPTs of the village of Stavishchany, Belogorie district of Khmelnitsky province, to the jurisdiction of the Kiev patriarchate. [Report at "Rural Ukrainian village debates jurisdiction of Orthodox parish"]

The press service of the Shepetovka diocese of UPTs reports that at the meeting mentioned in the publication, the question about a transfer of the parish of UPTs of the village of Stavishchany to the UPTsKP was not discussed.

"Both the parish of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the parish of the so-called UPTsKP do not have their own house of worship in that village. A local farmer decided to build a chapel and therefore on 22 May he initiated a meeting which would determine the affiliation of the future building," the report of the Shepetovka diocese of UPTs notes.

The diocese reports that the businessman himself is a supporter of UPTsKP, about which he also told the audience. After speeches by the clergy of UPTs and representatives of UPTsKP, a vote was held. A majority, 19 of 36 persons present, supported the idea of affiliation of the future chapel in the jurisdiction of the Kiev patriarchate.

During the meeting, no other questions were raised, the letter says. "Thus in the village two parishes are operating, as previously. The parish of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church will continue to serve under the omophorion of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufrey, and its ruling bishop, His Eminence Archbishop of Shepetovka and Slavuta Panteleimon.

"The presentation of information by the website of the Khmelnitsky diocese of UPTsKP about this event is incorrect and doubtful not only from the point of view of journalistic ethics but also the Holy Gospel," the UPTs document notes.

Since the false report was reprinted in many publications and evoked resonance in society, the press service of the Shepetovka diocese of UPTs expressed the hope that in the future "news media will disseminate information about the Shepetovka diocese using reliable and honest sources."
