Ukrainian religious communities cooperate on public actions

ALL-UKRAINIAN COUNCIL OF CHURCHES PREPARES OWN PLAN FOR STRUGGLE WITH CORRUPTION

The heads of churches and religious organizations assembled in order to compose a program of their own joint actions aimed at the struggle with corruption in Ukraine.

 

Its discussion was held during a session of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations on 22 June 2015 under the chairmanship of the director of Churches of Seventh-Day Adventists, Viktor Alekseenko, the Institute of Religious Liberty reports.

 

A draft of joint measures provides for educational work with their own faithful, in particular through thematic sermons, seminars and round tables, and action with public appeals against corrupt activities and a corrupt life style. The foundation for this is a declaration by the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations regarding this problem, which after agreement will be presented to the public at a press conference.

 

The All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations also plans to draw news media and means of public advertising into this process, and to devote special attention to educational work among the student community, judges, prosecutors, and police officers.

 

In addition, the heads of churches and religious organizations called the president of Ukraine to sign draft law No. 1447 that parliament adopted on 2 June about the right of religious organizations to establish academic institutions. The council of churches also formulated its own suggestions for resolving problems connected with the draft of clergy for military service.

 

Archbishop Evstraty informed the audience about the results of cooperation with the constitutional commission with regard to suggestions sent by the council of churches for consideration in the process of preparing a new edition of the Ukrainian constitution.

 

The session's participants planned the international activity of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations which provides for measures aimed at understanding with the religious community of Russia and the presentation of objective information about events in Ukraine.
