DOCUMENT: APPEAL FROM LEADER OF YABLOKO PARTY TO PATRIARCH OF RPTsMP REGARDING MONUMENT ON LUBYANKA
Your Holiness:
Several days ago, the Moscow City Duma approved the conduct of a referendum regarding returning the monument to Dzerzhinsky on Lubyanka Square.
"In calling now for the reverence of Lenin and Stalin, the initiators of the restoration of the monument to Dzerzhinsky trample upon the unmarked graves of new martyrs and confessors of the Russian church and of hundreds of thousands of murdered innocent fellow citizens of our country:" these words spoken several years ago by a member of the Holy Synod, Metropolitan of Volokolamsk Ilarion, are no less pertinent now, and perhaps even more so.
The Yabloko party, like the Russian Orthodox Church too, is a consistent opponent of bolshevism, of which Dzerzhinsky is one of the bloody symbols.
Early in the month, organizers of the erection of a monument to Prince Vladimir were forced to acknowledge: the area on Vorobiev Hills is not suitable for setting up such a massive structure. Now a search for a new space is underway. The Commission on Monumental Art of the Moscow City Duma will consider this question on 14 July.
I suggest building the monument to Prince Vladimir on Lubyanka Square. So far as I know, the initiators of the erecting of the monument have not spoken against this. I think it extremely proper that on this place, where the monument to the murderer stood, there appear a monument to the Holy Prince Vladimir, who determined Russia's civilizational choice for a thousand years ahead.
I ask you, Your Holiness, to send to the Russian Military Historical Society and to members of the Commission on Monumental Arts of the Moscow City Duma a call for approving the erection of a monument to Prince Vladimir on Lubyanka Square.
I am sure that your voice will be heard and that such an injustice as the restoration of the monument to Dzerzhinsky, a man of the system that was responsible for the death of tens of millions of people, will not be accomplished.
