City residents obstruct church construction in St. Petersburg

CHURCH TO BE MOVED FROM MALINOVKA PARK TO BLOCK RESERVED FOR HOSPITAL

Fontanka, 7 July 2015

After rejection for construction in Malinovka Park, it I planned to move the church of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women to a block that earlier had been reserved for a hospital. An area of 2.7 hectares has been allotted for construction at the corner of Commune and Vodoprovodnoy streets.

The NIPTsGenplan [Scientific Research and Drafting Center] is preparing a draft of a plan for the block to which the project of construction of the church of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women will be transferred. Meanwhile, back in the 1970s, the block was reserved for a maternity clinic and hospital. At present, an open parking lot and private houses are located there, an activist who is working for the preservation of Malinovka Park, Marianna Alferova, told Fontanka.

The total size of the block is 11.5 hectares, which actually was reserved for the needs of the Committee on Health Protection, this agency confirmed for Fontanka. However, specific plans for construction on the parcel of land have still not been worked out. Now the space for the potential hospital will be reduced by almost a quarter.

At the same time on this block, whether it is planned to build the church on the site of the parking lot or on the site of the private homes is still not clear. The planning of the project is still being worked out and the NIPTsGenplan says only that on the block there is no capital construction for a church. We recall that the blueprint of a church of 67 meters in height was developed by the studio Interkolumnium for construction in Malinovka Park on Kosygin Prospect. However, because of protests of local residents, Smolny [city government] rejected the reduction of the green zone. It is planned to rescind the order providing the plot to the church in July.  (tr. by PDS, posted 8 July 2015)
