SOVA Center of News and Analysis, 23 July 2015

In Kurgan province, the FSB [Federal Security Service] seized an Arabic text of the Quran from prisoners and sent it for expert analysis. According to information from Urals rights advocates, this was not an isolated case of discrimination against Muslims.

On 17 July 2015 it was reported that in the middle of June in Kurgan province, FSB personnel seized four copies of the Quran in Arabic from Muslim prisoners in Penal Colony-2. The Arabic text of the Quran was sent for expert analysis on the subject matter of extremism and it was returned to the prisoners two weeks later.

The father of one of the Muslim prisoners told rights advocates that there were other cases of discrimination against Muslims in the colony: "Personnel of the colony provoked convicted Muslims into aggression: they offended their religious feelings, took away religious literature and prayer rugs, and they did not permit them to go to the mosque that had been built at the expense of Muslims.
