INTER-RELIGIOUS COUNCIL OF RUSSIA SUPPORTS RUSSIAN OPERATION IN SYRIA
RIA Novosti, 30 September 2015
The Inter-Religious Council of Russia supported the decision of the Federation Council that permits the use of Russian armed forces abroad for conducting air operations striking blows against terrorists from the Islamic State in Syria.
Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier appealed to the Federation Council for permission to use Russian armed forces abroad. The Senate approved this appeal. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that airplanes of the Russian Air Force began conducting the air operation by striking precise blows to terrorists from the Islamic State in Syria. Russia intends to use aviation exclusively, acting upon the request of Syrian President Bashar Asad, who is conducting a struggle against terrorists from the Islamic State, the head of the administration of the Kremlin, Sergei Ivanov, reported on Wednesday.
"Traditional religious societies of Russia have accepted with understanding the decision of the Federation Council to permit the use of armed forces of the country for protection of civilians of Syria from terrorist threats and for support of government forces of the Syrian Arab Republic in its struggle against DAESH [also known as ISIS and ISIL] (an organization that is prohibited on the territory of the Russian federation)," the statement of the inter-religious council says.
Religious leaders expressed the hope that "Russia's help will remove from the people of Syria the threat of terror and hasten the approach of a peaceful life in this country and in all of the Middle East on the basis of dialogue and accord among various ethnic, religious, and ideological groups."
