COMMITTEE OF PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY OF O.S.C.E. SUPPORTS RUSSIA'S SUGGESTED DRAFT OF RESOLUTION ON IMPERMISSIBILITY OF RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION
Interfax-Religiia, 10 July 2017
The General Committee on Democracy, Human Rights, and Humanitarian Questions of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) supported on Saturday at a session in Minsk a draft of a resolution suggested by the Russian federation regarding the impermissibility of discrimination and intolerance with respect to Christians, Muslims, and adherents of other religions.
"On the agenda are problems of intolerance, discrimination, violence, and terrorist acts on grounds of religious affiliation and convictions with respect to Christians, Muslims, and adherents of other religions, and this presents a real threat to security within our organization," said a member of the [Russian] Federal Council, Liudmila Narusova, in presenting the draft of the resolution.
She emphasized that "freedom of thought, religion, and religious confession is one of the fundamental rights, which are also enshrined in international legal documents and in national legislation."
"We are convinced that the situation of all believers demands of us not discussions but concrete steps," L. Narusova said. The resolution calls the countries of OSCE "to speedily adopt the declaration concerning increasing efforts in combating intolerance and discrimination with regard to representatives of all religions."
