Russian presidential candidate may pray with American lawmakers

KSENIA SOBCHAK INVITED TO TRADITIONAL PRAYER BREAKFAST

Interfax-Religiia, 24 January 2018

Ksenia Sobchak, a candidate for the presidency of the Russian federation, journalist, and T.V. anchor, has been invited to the U.S.A. for the prayer breakfast on 1 February, which the American president traditionally attends, and she will participate in it if her schedule permits, Ksenia Chudinova, the press secretary of K. Sobchak, said.

"It is possible that Ksenia will attend this event. We have been invited, but her schedule is very tight. If it works out, she will be present," K. Chudinova told Interfax on Wednesday.

She said that K. Sobchak will be in the U.S.A. less than three full days, and in that time she expects to participate in a large number of different appearances and meetings.

Earlier the chairman of the State Duma, Viacheslav Volodin, reported that legislators had accepted the invitation of the American side and the chairs of three parliamentary committees—Andrei Makarov (for budget and taxes), Anatoly Aksakov (for financial markets) and Viacheslav Nikonov (for education and science)—will participate in a number of events along with their colleagues from the Congress of the U.S.A.

The decision to send these deputies to Washington was made by the Council of the Duma, one of the members of the council explained, in turn, upon the conclusion of the meeting. "Our colleagues will participate in the national prayer breakfast, which, by tradition, is attended by the president of the U.S.A., and in which many prominent politicians participate," he told journalists.

This will be the 66th of such "breakfasts": that is how many years it has been conducted annually on the first Thursday of February, the deputy explained. He said that for this event everyone is invited "in a personal capacity" by a special joint commission of the Senate and House of Representatives of the Congress of the U.S.A. "Participation in this breakfast gives a good opportunity in an informal setting to discuss important problems, including with people who interest you," the member of the Council of the Duma noted.

The breakfast is organized by the Congress of the U.S.A. along with the Christian organization "Fellowship Foundation," to which are invited representatives of business and politics, and public and religious leaders, about 3,000 in all from several dozen countries. It is expected that the delegation from the Russian federation will include about 70 persons. (tr. by PDS, posted 24 January 2018)
