SARATOV OBLAST RESIDENT SUSPECTED OF PROMOTING IDEAS OF RELIGIOUS EXTREMISM

The activity of adherents of an international religious association promoting extremist ideology has been terminated in Saratov oblast, the press service of the investigation department of the S.K.R. [Investigative Committee of Russia] for the region reports.
According to information of the investigation, a 50-year-old resident of the oblast identified himself as an adherent of the Tablighi Jamaat [literally "Society of Preachers"], which is forbidden in the Russian Federation.
The investigation concluded that the man, specifically, "expressed approval and justification of the ideology and also directly arranged and personally participated in regular meetings during which an extremist ideology was promoted among residents of Saratov oblast."
During a search in the place of residence of the suspect and his acquaintances, electronic information storage devices, mobile telephones, and printed literature including items on the Federal List of Extremist Materials were confiscated.
A criminal case is being investigated based on part 2 of article 282.2 of the Criminal Code of the R.F.—"for participation by a number of persons in activity of a religious association for which a court decision prohibiting it has taken legal effect because of conducting extremist activity."
The activity of the international religious association of Tablighi Jamaat was banned on Russian territory by decision of the Russian Supreme Court. (tr. by PDS, posted 20 May 2021)
