SUPREME COURT REJECTS APPEAL OF JEHOVISTS AGAINST CLOSING THEIR BRANCH IN ELISTA
Interfax-Religiia, 7 July 2016
The Russian Supreme Court found the liquidation of the branch of Jehovah's Witnesses in Elista [in Kalmykia], which was ruled to be an extremist organization, to be legal.
As a correspondent of Interfax reports, thereby the Board of Appeals dismissed the appeal of representatives of the religious organization.
Previously the Supreme Court of Kalmykia ruled the branch of Jehovah's Witnesses in Elista to be an extremist organization. The reason was an incident of distribution of forbidden literature in classes that the Jehovists conducted.
In June, the Russian Supreme Court also found the liquidation of congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses in Belgorod and Stary Oskol to be legal.
While earlier the Russian Supreme Court overturned a decision about the liquidation of a Tiumen branch of Jehovists after refusing to recognize this organization to be extremist.
In March of this year, a Krasnodar territorial court granted the petition of the prosecutor of the territory to find the local religious organization of Jehovah's Witnesses in Abinsk extremist and to liquidate it for distribution of extremist literature.
In November 2014 the Russian Supreme Court found the decision to liquidate the organization's branch in Samara to be legal. (tr. by PDS, posted 7 July 2016)
