In Yalta, operatives of the Crimean directorate of the F.S.B. [Federal Security Service] halted the work of a local cell of the religious sect of Jehovah's Witnesses, conducting searches at the place of residence of the alleged leader. Security personnel think that a 34-year-old man organized meetings and drew new people into the ranks of his followers. This is indicated by forbidden literature and disks found in his home.
Besides this, personnel of the service seized telephones, computers, and money, among which currency was found. Now a criminal case on the basis of part 1 of article 282.2 of the CCRF, "Arranging the activity of an extremist organization," has been opened against the detained alleged leader, Kryminform reports, citing the regional directorate.
As Obzor has written previously, after the ban on the activity of Jehovah's Witnesses, the Sivash cell in Dzhankoy continued working. On 15 November of last year, law enforcement conducted searches in eight homes where evidence of illegal activity was found. In Yalta, the activity of a cell of the international religious organization of Jehovah's Witnesses, which is forbidden on the territory of the RF, was halted, the press service of the Crimean directorate of the F.S.B. of Russia reported on Wednesday.
"It was established that a 34-year-old resident of Yalta directed the activity of the local organization of Jehovah's Witnesses, conducted meetings and religious events, promoted the ideas of the aforementioned religious sect, and also drew new devotees into its ranks," the report says.
The investigative department of the Directorate of the Federal Security Service (UFSB) opened a case on part 1 of article 282.2 of the Russian Criminal Code (directing the activity of an extremist organization) with respect to a resident of Yalta.
Searches were conducted at the places of residence of the organizer and members of the sect, during which forbidden literature, telephones, computer technology, and financial resources, including foreign currency, were discovered and confiscated. [, , ,] (tr. by PDS, posted 20 March 2019)
