Q: What did you do after graduation and what are you doing now?
After graduating from Stetson, I moved to Washington DC and started working full time at the Maurine Littleton Gallery in Georgetown. I gained a lot of experience dealing with the business end of exhibiting art, and the importance of installation, lighting, packing/shipping, sales, and talking to clients. Currently I’m one of the exhibiting artists at the Maurine Littleton Gallery, but I also work with a local organization called No Kings Collective setting up pop up shows within the district. I try and get my hands into anything creative between designing tattoos, company logos, custom restaurant decor, I even started a business making wooden bow ties called SwitchWood.
Q: Did you ever see yourself doing what you are doing now when you took your first Art course @ Stetson?
When I took my first art course at Stetson I had no plans to become an artist, I wasn’t even an art major, but after a year of being in the business school I wasn’t happy. I decided to follow my passion and pursue art. I had no idea where my career would take me after graduating, and I certainly didn’t expect to be in DC as long as I have, but the connections I’ve gained and the experiences I have been able to obtain by being in one of the best galleries in the district has been very exciting.
Q: What advice do you have for someone taking their first course right now?
Be prepared to work really hard and dedicate most of your time to creating; be open and receptive to negative criticism; don’t ever half-ass something and say “that’s the way it’s supposed to look” as an excuse, there is no justification for a clear lack of effort; time management is critical.
Q: What’s the best thing you learned studying Art @ Stetson?
Pursue your passion, follow your instinct, and don’t be afraid to be overly ambitious.
