{"id":66782,"date":"2023-12-13T14:57:00","date_gmt":"2023-12-13T19:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/docket\/?p=66782"},"modified":"2023-12-12T21:16:33","modified_gmt":"2023-12-13T02:16:33","slug":"congratulations-participants-in-the-fall-2023-phelps-dunbar-first-year-appellate-advocacy-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/docket\/congratulations-participants-in-the-fall-2023-phelps-dunbar-first-year-appellate-advocacy-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Congratulations&#8211;Participants in the Fall 2023 Phelps Dunbar First-Year Appellate Advocacy Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Congratulations to the participants in, and the winners of, the Fall 2023 Phelps Dunbar First-Year Appellate Advocacy Competition.\u00a0 The first-year appellate advocacy competition is the capstone event at the end of Stetson\u2019s R&amp;W II courses.\u00a0 All R&amp;W II students had completed an appellate brief and presented an oral argument, and the top six students (three from each section) were selected to participate.\u00a0 The competition was held last night in the Smith Courtroom at the Tampa Law Center.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please join me in congratulating ALL of these students for their hard work and extraordinary performances.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants and Round Winners:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Round 1:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Zoe Stern<a> <\/a>v. Deepika Sathe (round winner)<br>Round 2:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Sam Hart v. Rachel Lies (round winner)<br>Round 3:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ernesto Martinez v. Bailey Long (round winner)<br>Best Oralist: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Rachel Lies<br>Runner-up Best Oralist: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bailey Long<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students dusted off their oral argument notes and participated in this competition after just finishing their final exams on Monday evening.\u00a0 The attorneys from Phelps Dunbar asked many thoughtful questions about whether a state university professor\u2019s use of pronouns in the classroom was protected speech and whether paid administrative leave is an adverse employment action.
