{"id":73503,"date":"2024-08-01T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-01T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/docket\/?p=73503"},"modified":"2024-07-30T08:56:03","modified_gmt":"2024-07-30T12:56:03","slug":"legal-pro-bono-opportunity-voting-rights-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/docket\/legal-pro-bono-opportunity-voting-rights-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Aug. 29 Legal Pro Bono Opportunity &#8211; Voting Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Opportunity to Help Returning Citizens (citizens with felony convictions) seek restoration of their voting rights:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>August 29, 2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5 pm-7 pm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2335 22nd Ave South<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>St. Petersburg<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Provide intake for Returning Citizens seeking help with restoration of voting rights at an event co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters and Life From Inside Out, a group that helps Returning Citizens adjust to life after incarceration. You\u2019ll help Returning Citizens identify their eligibility to receive help from a pro bono attorney. We\u2019ll provide training via recorded sessions. <strong>The only required in-person commitment is the August 29 event<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the event, you\u2019ll have the opportunity to help an attorney represent a Returning Citizen by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Researching the criminal records of Returning Citizens to determine eligibility for restoration of voting rights. Among other things, determine whether there are any outstanding fine or fee obligations that must be paid or extinguished in order for a Returning Citizen to register to vote.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As appropriate, assisting in preparation of: (a) a request for an Advisory Opinion from the Division of Elections, to confirm eligibility to vote; or (b) a Motion to Modify Sentence to be filed in Florida Circuit Court, to request a waiver or reduction of financial obligation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This follow-up work is optional. After the intake session, the work will be remote, without any required in-person meetings or specific scheduled work hours. You\u2019ll receive training, and will get pro bono credit for the training time. Once you\u2019re trained, you\u2019ll be on a list of students who will be contacted when a new client is referred. At the time of the referral you\u2019ll have the option to assist if you\u2019re available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you have questions or are interested in this project, please contact&nbsp;Mary C.
