Shumaker and Gardner observed oral arguments at the high court on Jan. 15.<\/p>\n<p>The case could impact wetlands across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAssisting with the amicus brief was an exciting and unique experience,\u201d said Okuno. \u201cIt was incredible to work on a brief that was actually sent to the U.S. Supreme Court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The case of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/case-files\/cases\/koontz-v-st-johns-river-water-management-district\/\">Koontz v. St Johns River Water Management District<\/a> has been in litigation for a number of years and is now before the U.S Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>The St. Johns River Water Management District is responsible for preserving and managing Florida\u2019s vital water resources in all or part of 18 counties throughout the northeast and east\u2013central part of the state.<\/p>\n<p>The amicus brief, filed by Gardner and Goldman-Carter on behalf of 12 distinguished wetland scientists, academics and professionals, is a science-based brief. It describes the critical ecosystem services that wetlands provide to people, businesses and communities; the importance of &#8220;no net loss&#8221; of wetland functions; and the need for accountability in the loss and gain of wetland functions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no excuse to continue to allow wetland losses, now that we know how effective wetlands are in providing clean water and other essential services,\u201d said Joy B. Zedler, past chair of the National Research Council Committee on Mitigating Wetland Losses Committee, and one of the amicus parties.<\/p>\n<p>Gardner, the director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.stetson.edu\/international\/biodiversity\/index.php\">Institute for Biodiversity Law and Policy<\/a> at Stetson, won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.eli.org\/nwa\/nwaprogram.htm\">National Wetlands Award for Education and Outreach<\/a> in 2006 and is the past chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ramsarcommittee.us\/index.asp\">U.S. National Ramsar Committee<\/a>, promoting the conservation and sustainable use of domestic and international wetlands.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two Stetson University College of Law students and their environmental law professor worked with the National Wildlife Federation to prepare an amicus brief in a wetlands case being heard by the U.S. Supreme Court in January. \u00bb Read the amicus brief Stetson second-year student Marc Shumaker and third-year law student Erin Okuno helped prepare the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":25,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,6],"tags":[1236,27,1190,348,734],"class_list":["post-11217","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news-1","category-student-features","tag-amicus-brief","tag-environmental-law","tag-stetson-today","tag-wetlands","tag-wildlife"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.3 -
