Crews won a cash award and complimentary registration at the Seventh Annual Solo &amp; Small Firm Conference, and his essay on the topic of maintaining confidentiality with technology was published in the June <a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridabar.org\/DIVCOM\/JN\/JNJournal01.nsf\/8c9f13012b96736985256aa900624829\/9783b5e97bf2d5f085257b7a004d3237!OpenDocument\">Florida Bar Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12818\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12818\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.stetson.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/554406_346420948727830_108388435864417_865070_977376730_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12818 \" title=\"Stetson Law student Kevin Crews.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.law.stetson.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/554406_346420948727830_108388435864417_865070_977376730_n-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Stetson Law student Kevin Crews.\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12818\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stetson Law student Kevin Crews.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Crews\u2019 essay outlined how Florida lawyers can develop best practices to protect client confidentiality when working with e-documents. He outlined potential risks to client confidentiality that might be encountered over the Internet and offered some solutions. He explained how using public Wi-Fi and email, for example, might put client confidentiality at risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTechnology has the potential for destroying confidentiality, particularly if lawyers do not know the risks. Lawyers must use technology smartly; being moderately \u2018tech-savvy\u2019 is a de facto job requirement for today\u2019s lawyers,\u201d wrote Crews. \u201cThe best way to use technology properly is to understand it, which will allow lawyers to create thoughtful \u2014 and effective \u2014 policies and operating procedures to manage electronic files and messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crews said that he learned of the essay contest and became interested in the topic in Stetson adjunct professor Jim Martin\u2019s class on Law Practice Management.
