Long explores <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cap-press.com\/pdf\/9781611630145.pdf\">The Science Behind the Art of Legal Writing<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16722\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16722\" style=\"width: 145px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Cameron-Catherine-crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16722\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Cameron-Catherine-crop.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Catherine Cameron.\" width=\"145\" height=\"145\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16722\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Catherine Cameron.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The newly released book uses empirical research to show what good legal writing is and why it works.\u00a0Carolina Academic Press published the book as a resource for law students and legal professionals. A review of the book was published in the Law Library Journal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither of us knew of a book that explained <em>why<\/em> our legal writing students should write the way we teach them to write,\u201d said Professor Cameron. \u201cThis is the first legal writing text that takes a scientific approach to that question. We hope this book will give law students and practitioners a better understanding of the reasons behind legal writing conventions so that they can make better informed decisions about their writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/cameron-catherine-j\/\">Professor Cameron<\/a> teaches and researches in the areas of legal writing and media law. She earned a bachelor&#8217;s degree in journalism, a master&#8217;s degree in mass communications, and a law degree from the University of Florida. Professor Cameron worked for the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, a non-profit organization that specializes in media law issues in Washington, D.C., where she filed amicus briefs in high-profile cases affecting the media, including two cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. News media frequently quote her expertise on First Amendment issues.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/long-lance-n\/\">Professor Long<\/a> &#8216;s scholarship focuses on empirical analyses of language patterns in appellate briefs and opinions. He recently received national media attention for his most recent co-authored article,\u00a0\u201cWhen Justices (Subconsciously) Attack: The Theory of Argumentative Threat and the Supreme Court,\u201d which analyzes differences between the language used by Supreme Court justices in majority and dissenting opinions. Professor Long earned his law degree from Brigham Young University.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16724\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16724\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Long2011FavoriteCROP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16724 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Long2011FavoriteCROP-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Lance Long.\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16724\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Lance Long.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Stetson consistently ranks among the top legal writing programs in the country and is home to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/academics\/lrw\/\">Institute for the Advancement of Legal Communication<\/a>. The institute\u2019s training programs provide instruction to lawyers, judges, and other professionals to improve their legal communication skills.<\/p>\n<p>Stetson hosted a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/academics\/lrw\/legal-writing-academy.php\">Legal Writing Academy<\/a> on Jan. 30 at the Tampa Law Center\u00a0on Persuasive Legal Writing: What Every Lawyer Should Know.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A groundbreaking new book by Stetson professors Catherine J.
