Medell\u00edn,\u00a0a senior professor of ecology at the National University of Mexico\u00a0known as the \u201cBat Man of Mexico,\u201d spoke Thursday afternoon, Oct. 22, on Stetson&#8217;s Gulfport campus. His presentation\u00a0on\u00a0&#8220;How to Do Conservation Science, Implement It, and Not Die Trying&#8221; was part of Stetson&#8217;s public Edward and Bonnie Foreman Biodiversity Lecture series.\u00a0Dr. Medell\u00edn is\u00a0the past president of the Society for the Conservation of Biology.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18538\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18538\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/BEST.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18538 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/BEST-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Rodrigo Medell\u00edn spoke at Stetson Law on Oct. 22.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Rodrigo Medell\u00edn spoke at Stetson Law on Oct. 22.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;There are a few messages that I hope that students are going to get,&#8221; Dr. Medell\u00edn said. &#8220;Number one is that biological diversity is an absolute need for everyone\u2019s lives right now. Number two: they have a stake in it and they have something to do about it. They can easily get engaged in improving the situation where biodiversity loss is happening. And three: use the messages of the lecture for everyday life: thinking outside of the box, getting out of your comfort zone, getting engaged with politicians. I think with those messages, the lecture is going to be well rounded so that people know what to do and that they can actually have fun in the process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Stetson&#8217;s Edward and Bonnie Foreman Biodiversity Lecture series\u00a0brings distinguished speakers to campus to discuss a wide range of environmental issues.\u00a0The Institute for Biodiversity Law and Policy at Stetson regularly hosts international speakers and conferences\u00a0and\u00a0coordinates courses, seminars and internships on topics including wetland law and policy, environmental law, natural resources and international environmental law.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, visit <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/international\/biodiversity\/\">www.stetson.edu\/law\/international\/biodiversity<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Rodrigo A.
