{"id":19236,"date":"2016-01-28T17:08:04","date_gmt":"2016-01-28T22:08:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/?p=19236"},"modified":"2016-01-28T17:15:57","modified_gmt":"2016-01-28T22:15:57","slug":"19236","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/index.php\/2016\/01\/28\/19236\/","title":{"rendered":"Rising star for community service and equality: Student Nathan Bruemmer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is no surprise that Stetson University College of Law honored student Nathan Bruemmer with its Rising Star award in his first year of law school.\u00a0For Nathan, law school started as a dream decades ago, before he spent a career as a teacher and started a family.\u00a0He said he\u00a0considers it a privilege to work on community service initiatives.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19240\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19240\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Nathan-Bruemmer-HS.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Nathan-Bruemmer-HS-200x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Nathan Bruemmer.\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19240\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nathan Bruemmer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since starting as a first-year student at Stetson law school in 2014, Nathan has led the Stetson Democrats, the Lambda Legal Society at Stetson, worked as a third-grade reading tutor with Lawyers for Literacy, and organized numerous activities on campus including the recent Transgender Day of Remembrance event.<\/p>\n<p>In his spare time, Nathan participates in local, state and national initiatives. He is invited to speak regularly about LGBT equality issues on behalf of Equality Florida and several other organizations.\u00a0In November of 2015, Nathan helped train more than 120 law enforcement officers in Orlando on transgender inclusion and diversity.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Nathan is serving as the ABA Law Student Division Liaison to the National LGBT Bar Association. He is also\u00a0a\u00a0member of the ABA SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) Commission\u2019s Advocacy Committee. At the same time, Nathan maintains a strong academic standing, competes for Stetson\u2019s Trial Team and Alternative Dispute Resolution Board, serves as Stetson Law\u2019s ABA representative, and is a Stetson Law Ambassador.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19239\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19239\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/TDOR-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19239\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/TDOR-4-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Stetson's program for Transgender Remembrance Day included a candlelight vigil. Photo courtesy Nathan Bruemmer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nathan\u2019s commitment to community is also reflected in his academic pursuits.\u00a0He joined the Clemency Project 2014 through a course offered at Stetson law school, did a Homeless Advocacy Internship, and signed up for\u00a0Stetson&#8217;s Veterans Advocacy Clinic during the spring semester.
