Consultants from Elon University in North Carolina traveled to Stetson University College of Law on Feb. 8-9 to present on LGBTQIA inclusion in the campus community.<\/p>\n

Matthew Antonia Bosch and\u00a0Brooke Barnett, Ph.D., facilitated four events including a\u00a0faculty workshop, student workshop, break-out session with the law school deans, and a break-out session for LGBTQIA student leaders.<\/p>\n

Bosch is the director of the Gender & LGBTQIA Center and\u00a0Barnett is\u00a0the associate provost for inclusive community and a professor in the communications school at Elon University.<\/p>\n

Bosch presented an interactive session, \u201cCultural Competency and Professionalism: The Path to Inclusion of the LGBTQIA Community in Practice,\u201d to Stetson law students on Feb. 9.<\/p>\n

“Not only did this session focus on how to achieve a friendly, inclusive campus community, but Bosch also provided hands-on tools to build a culture of respect, acceptance, celebration and to effect positive change,” said student leader and Lambda president Nathan Bruemmer, who helped organize the event.<\/p>\n

Based on their successful inclusion efforts, Elon University was\u00a0named among\u00a0CampusPride\u2019s \u201cTop 25 LGBTQ-Friendliest Campuses in the U.S.<\/a>\u201d and received a grant to provide training and coaching to other southeastern universities.<\/p>\n

\u201cCreating a safe environment and treating one another with dignity and respect is part of professionalism,” said Bruemmer. “We begin to shape and model that professionalism while we are law students through our interactions with professors, in clinics and internships, and with one another on campus. I hope this and future cultural competency workshops will carry this level of professionalism forward into our legal careers. \u201d<\/p>\n

The Lambda Legal Society, President\u2019s Diversity Council, American Bar Association Law Student Division of Stetson Law, and Stetson’s Office of Student Life sponsored the event.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
