{"id":19732,"date":"2016-03-01T18:33:33","date_gmt":"2016-03-01T23:33:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/?p=19732"},"modified":"2016-03-01T18:36:27","modified_gmt":"2016-03-01T23:36:27","slug":"19732","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/index.php\/2016\/03\/01\/19732\/","title":{"rendered":"Floridians are stewards for endangered sea turtles, scientist tells Stetson law campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cFlorida is a very special place for sea turtles and Floridians play an important role as stewards,\u201d Dr. Anne Meylan, senior research scientist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, told students, faculty, and members of the public gathered on March 1 on Stetson law school\u2019s Gulfport campus to hear her talk.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Meylan presented \u201cFlorida\u2019s Global Importance as a Nesting Site for Sea Turtles\u201d as part of Stetson\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/international\/biodiversity\/speakers-conferences.php\">Edward and Bonnie Foreman Biodiversity Lecture Series<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D5JmidftrQ0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>She described the five endangered species of sea turtles nesting on Florida\u2019s shores and the state\u2019s important role. She illustrated how Florida hosts 90 percent of all loggerhead sea turtle nests in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlorida\u2019s beaches are threatened in a way they never have been before,\u201d said Dr. Meylan, who explained that Florida has more than 800 miles of nesting beaches.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Meylan said that factors including coastal development, sea level rise and erosion all threaten successful sea turtle nesting in Florida.<\/p>\n<p>She said that enforcement of existing and new coastal management regulations, habitat design and conservation, land acquisition, conservation easements and a retreat from the shoreline could all help preserve Florida\u2019s beaches as nesting sites for the endangered sea turtles.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Royal Gardner, director of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/international\/biodiversity\/index.php\">Institute for Biodiversity Law and Policy<\/a>, introduced Dr. Meylan.<\/p>\n<p>The final presentation in Stetson\u2019s spring biodiversity lecture series is scheduled for 5 p.m. on April 13 in the Great Hall.
