{"id":20629,"date":"2016-06-14T16:41:40","date_gmt":"2016-06-14T20:41:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/?p=20629"},"modified":"2016-06-15T17:29:22","modified_gmt":"2016-06-15T21:29:22","slug":"elder-law-center-hosts-training-elder-abuse-florida-department-children-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/index.php\/2016\/06\/14\/elder-law-center-hosts-training-elder-abuse-florida-department-children-families\/","title":{"rendered":"Elder law center hosts training on elder abuse with Florida Department of Children and Families"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Center for Excellence in Elder Law recently completed a four-month training program with the Florida Department of Children and Families Suncoast Regions adult protective service investigators on June 1-2 at the\u00a0Tampa Law Center.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20690\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20690\" style=\"width: 264px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/flowers_headshot_2013.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/flowers_headshot_2013-264x300.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Roberta Flowers co-directs Stetson's elder law center.\" width=\"264\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Roberta Flowers co-directs Stetson&#8217;s elder law center.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Approximately 70 adult protective service investigators from Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Sarasota, Manatee, DeSoto, Lee, Glades, Collier, Charlotte, and Hendry Counties completed the training.<\/p>\n<p>Training program attendees had an opportunity to improve the knowledge base and skills that they use on a day-to-day basis while investigating allegations of elder abuse in the greater Tampa Bay area.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20724\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20724\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Elder-Law-Training.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20724\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Elder-Law-Training-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Roberta Flowers conducted training at the Tampa Law Center.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20724\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Roberta Flowers conducted training at the Tampa Law Center.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first of the three-phase program\u00a0began in February with a live training session at the Tampa Law Center. \u00a0Topics covered included interviewing clients with dementia, writing effective reports, investigating with an eye towards prosecution, and civil guardianship law.\u00a0 The second phase of the program included\u00a0a series of five video lectures that the investigators watched at their monthly staff meetings that covered topics such as reviewing medical records, addiction in the elderly, self-neglect, powers of attorney and working with elder law attorneys.\u00a0 The third and final phase\u00a0of the training was a live skills training day where the investigators honed their interviewing and testifying skills.<\/p>\n<p>After attending lectures by Stetson professors Roberta Flowers and Kelly Feeley, the investigators broke into small groups led by some of the region&#8217;s\u00a0best\u00a0trial attorneys where they applied\u00a0newly learned techniques through\u00a0mock client interviews and testifying at a mock trial.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers included professors Kirsten Davis, Feeley and Flowers; Judge David Demers; St. Petersburg College\u00a0Policy Ethics and Legal Studies Dean Susan Demers; ASA Julia Metts; attorneys Bob Biasatti,\u00a0David Blum,\u00a0Jeff Brown,\u00a0Patricia Calhoun, Christopher DeCarlo,\u00a0Jay Hebert,\u00a0Dominique Heller,\u00a0Steve Hitchcock and\u00a0Shirin Vesely; Director of Education at University of South Florida Health Byrd Alzheimer&#8217;s Institute Eileen Poiley; and\u00a0Elder Consumer Protection Fellow Brandon Robinson.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Roberta Flowers, co-director of the Center for Excellence in Elder Law, designed the APS investigator training program, which was fully funded by a grant from the Joy McCann Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Center for Excellence in Elder Law would like to extend an enormous thank you to the Joy McCann Foundation for supporting this worthy project, and to the many doctors, attorneys, academics, and APS supervisors who donated their most precious resources, their time and knowledge, to make this program a resounding success,&#8221;
