Students packed the Great Hall on Stetson’s Gulfport campus Tuesday night, Oct. 4, for a program with national panelists on children’s right to counsel. The program, “50 Years of In re Gault<\/em>: A Commemoration of Children’s Right to Counsel,” explored the progress in juvenile justice following the 1967 landmark Supreme Court decision in In re Gault<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Distinguished panelists included Whitney Untiedt, director of the Southern Juvenile Defender Center; Jessica Feierman, associate director of the Juvenile Law Center; and Eduardo Ferrer, founding member of the DC Lawyers for Youth presenting on the progress and barriers after Gault, waiver of counsel, adolescent development, and financial penalties in the juvenile justice system.<\/p>\n

Professor Judith Scully introduced the program, along with student Carolina Suazo.<\/p>\n
