{"id":24385,"date":"2017-10-10T12:03:17","date_gmt":"2017-10-10T16:03:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/?p=24385"},"modified":"2017-10-10T12:03:17","modified_gmt":"2017-10-10T16:03:17","slug":"dr-dwight-pitcaithley-presents-national-park-service-100-years-historian-reflects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/index.php\/2017\/10\/10\/dr-dwight-pitcaithley-presents-national-park-service-100-years-historian-reflects\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Dwight Pitcaithley presents on &#8220;The National Park Service After 100 Years: A Historian Reflects&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4_vV_KA5Wp0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nDr. Dwight Pitcaithley, historian and professor at New Mexico State University, kicked off the Foreman Biodiversity Lecture series on Oct. 9 at Stetson Law in Gulfport with a lecture on the National Park Service history, challenges and opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is more to national parks than parks,&#8221; Dr. Pitcaithley explained to the audience of law students, faculty, staff and members of the public gathered in the Great Hall to hear him talk. &#8220;NPS manages programs that reach beyond national park borders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Pitcaithley explained that there are 1,744 national register listings in Florida alone, and more than 89,000 listings across the country of national historic landmarks.<\/p>\n<p>He urged members of the audience to get involved in the future of the NPS and historical heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Stetson\u2019s Foreman Biodiversity Lecture series is coordinated through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/international\/biodiversity\/index.php\">Institute for Biodiversity Law and Policy<\/a>, which is the recipient of the 2016 American Bar Association\u2019s Distinguished Achievement Award in Environmental Law and Policy.
