A team from Texas Tech won first place in the National Pretrial Competition at Stetson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A team of law students from Texas Tech University School of Law won the National Pretrial Competition at Stetson University College of Law on Oct. 12-15 in Gulfport, Florida.<\/p>\n

Texas Tech student Brian Burkhart won Best Advocate in the final and semi-final rounds of competition.<\/p>\n

Baylor Law School placed second in the competition.<\/p>\n

Mississippi College School of Law won the Best Plaintiff Brief and Golden Gate University School of Law won the Best Defense Brief.<\/p>\n

Devon Gawley of University at Buffalo School of Law received Best Advocate Round One, Kristen Gavigan of Texas Tech University School of Law received Best Advocate Round Two, and Lindsay Joanov of Chapman University Fowler School of Law received Best Advocate Round Three.<\/p>\n

The competition, now in its 10th year, captures what attorneys do every day in offices and courtrooms across the U.S.<\/p>\n

Teams receive a problem based on normal pretrial issue; write two memoranda of law that will be scored; make oral arguments; and shift to an evidentiary hearing during which team members are required to present evidence and make a closing argument.<\/p>\n

Sixteen teams are invited to participate in the competition. Teams competed this year from California,\u00a0Florida, Illinois,\u00a0Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, South Dakota, Texas,\u00a0Virginia, and Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n
